Joe
Forshee Passes Away
Joe
was a prominent North Jacksonville man who shaped many changes for this
area as while as Jacksonville as a whole. He will be missed and our
sympathy goes out to his family. I would run into Joe at Frank's
Barber Shop, Winn Dixie and other locations and he always had a smile and
a hello. He and Jake Godbold have always been icons in the North
Jacksonville area and both have made a difference. We will miss Joe!

President's
March Message
Dear
Members,
I
love the month of March. I
remember when I lived in Pennsylvania the kids looked forward to the windy
weather so they could fly their kites.
Living in Jacksonville, so close to the beach, the kids can fly
their kites just about any month of the year.
We’ve
been having a good show of support from our members.
The last meeting on February 9th Nancy reported that we
had 41 in attendance. Of
course, that included our Guest Speaker, the Officer of the quarter and
their guests. Our last Board
meeting had 17 in attendance. I
hope this is an indicator that things are beginning to turn around.
I sincerely appreciate each and every one of you and your
commitment to our organization.
Great

Thank you, Mark.
You’re such an asset and sincerely appreciated!
I
included this statement in the last newsletter but it’s worth mentioning
again….Go to our website to see how you can use it to your advantage: Paul Forte can place your business ad on the Northside
Business Leaders website or can place it as a link.
This is an excellent way to get more exposure for your business.
Please take a few minutes to look at the website….and look at
Shannon Elian’s spotlight. She
and Paul Forte captured an excellent interview with Tim Petty, President
and owner of Pettyco Express.
Sincerely,
Patricia

Ms.
Senior Pageant Jacksonville
Now
for some good news: Many of
you already know this, but our own Nancy Burnett, yes, our
Secretary/Treasurer, is running for the title Ms. Senior Jacksonville.
And you really thought the old girl was ready to put out to
pasture. At times she
does feel older than dirt! What
a surprise!! The pageant will
be June 26, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Times Union Center for the Performing
Arts. If Nancy wins,
she would be eligible to compete in the Ms. Senior Florida pageant. It is
an exciting time for Nancy and her husband Steve.
Steve is feeling great about escorting a beauty pageant contestant
(his head is a bit swelled), but he has promised to get those taxes out of
the way so he can be home for the big event.
Nothing can stop him or get in the way. Nancy’s
platform is her work with the children through the Big Brothers Big
Sisters program. She has
received more blessings than she can count by being a part of these
children’s lives and giving them her love and warm spirit.
This year she is working as a Community Ambassador to recruit 200
male mentors. God
blesses her every day when she walks into a school class room and gets all
the smiles and hugs from these precious children.
Nothing comes free today, so she may be asking you for sponsorships
or donations to reach her $400 goal.
Donations or sponsorships can be in any denomination from $5.00 to
$100.00 and ads can be purchased for
recognition during this event.
It will be a lot more fun including all of her friends and family
in this exciting event.
Let her know you support her.
Board
Meeting on February 23rd, a Special nomination was made to add an additional Sergeant of
Arms to the club. The membership will be voting on Jackie
Revels at upcoming meeting March 9,
2010.

Jackie
has been with the club over a year and has been a great enthusiastic
contributor to the club. She is always offering her help
were needed to advance the Northside Business Leaders. If
you have failed to be sitting or interacting with her at one of
our meetings you need too. Jackie who is a manager at the
Synovus Bank is a very positive outgoing individual and an asset to the club. Don't miss our next meeting March
9, 2010,
when we
officially vote her to a Sergeant of Arms of the club. If
you are considering a new bank give Jackie a call at
265-5590. Synovus bank is conveniently located at the
River City Mall.
Judge
James Ruth's Mother (Laura Bridgewater) passed away February 23, 2010. The
wake was held at Peace Missionary Baptist Church, Thursday,
5-8:00pm. Funeral was held 10:00am, Friday at Peace Missionary Baptist Church. The club extends its condolence and prayers to long time
friend and member Judge Ruth and his family.
We
also send our prayers for the quick recovery of NBL member
Manning Woodley who was rushed to the hospital this week with an
internal issue.
Update:
Manning Woodley is
in Memorial Hospital with a stomach blockage. Extensive
testing is being done today to determine if surgery will be
necessary. Please keep Manning in your thoughts and
prayers that he will be up and back with us soon.

This
picture was taken in Ponte Vedra from the top of the 210
bridge crossing the intracoastal looking south towards St,
Augustine and Cape Canaveral .
The
photographer got up very early and took this picture of the last
nighttime space shuttle launch and was kind enough to share with
his co-workers and whomever else would appreciate the beauty of
the space launch.
He
took the picture using a tri-pod and the elapsed time for the
picture was several minutes in order to get the full fire-trail
(this is why the stars are little lines instead of dots).

First
Coast High School Meeting
"Swimming
Pool"

First Coast High
School hosted a meeting to discuss the building of the swimming pool, which
has been in the mill since 2000. During the Warren Alvarez tenure on
the City Council District 11, money was allocated to build a swimming pool
at First Coast High. Most of the money came from JIA incentive money
to build or support items, which would enhance the area around Jacksonville
International Airport. The amount set aside is more than four
million dollars.
The city was to be given land by the school board to be used to build the
pool at the First Coast High School.
This pool would
be used by FCHS, the public and outside events. It was suggested by
Warren Alvarez and others to allow the YMCA to run the pool and to charge a
nominal fee to use the pool. This money would help defray some of the
costs for maintenance. It appeared to be a Win-Win deal for all
parties.
On January 14th,
Councilman Holt had a meeting , to discuss the development of the New
Sheffield Park. At the same meeting a group of concerned FCHS parents,
faculty and students raised questions about the FCHS pool. At that
time Councilman Holt made it clear he was not in favor of the pool and felt
the earmarked money could be better used elsewhere.

The FCHS and
Coach Ronald Soder invited Councilman Holt to discuss the swimming pool in
greater detail at their meeting on February 11th. Councilman Holt
brought legal, finance, construction and engineering personnel
to assist in questions that might be asked. Councilman Holt made
opening comments to the 169 people who attended the meeting and then turned
over the meeting to the various people he brought to talk about the
pool.

After they spoke he said thank you and turned the floor over to
Coach Soder. While proceeding to his seat he was asked to answer a
question. Councilman Holt refused to take questions from the
floor, but after being asked by those there over and over to talk with
them, he agreed to talk to them one at a time at the front of the room if he
had to stay till midnight. The questions and answers was filmed by a
student and maybe they will let us know some of the dialog later. The
question & answer session went orderly while I was there.

Plans for
Sheffield
Park
The
meeting was well attended and good questions from the floor were
asked. Most of the questions were answered, but a few will
require follow up. Most seemed happy with the Sheffield
Park project.
The
First Coast Swimming Pool Project didn't go as smooth and
Councilman Holt said he stopped the project for a number of
reasons. Dick Berry of the Northside Business Leaders was
very unhappy with what has happen to the pool. Dick &
former Councilman Warren Alvarez were the ones who did the leg
work and obtained the funds for the project. Many others
from the community expressed their unhappiness with the project.
Holt offered to talk to them after the meeting.
The
swimming pool project is controversial now with the advent
of a new pool going in at the Sheffield Park in later
phases. The money set aside now for the First Coast School
could be lost if Councilman Holt is not careful. The money
that is available would buy a much better facility do to the
present construction climate.
Northside
Business Leaders Club was well represented: President Patricia
Hamn & her husband Tony, Warren Alvarez, Dick Berry, Nancy
Burnett, Dewitt & Sandy Gibbs and Paul Forte.
